Addendum

EU governing bodies associated and responsible for the DPP’s evolution:

• The Ecodesign Directive: Adopted in 2009, establishes efficiency and labeling requirements wide-array of energy-consuming products such as lighting, heating, refrigeration, appliances, electronics, and automotive.
• The Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP): During 2015, a set of actions to transition the EU away from a linear to a circular economy were adopted. With regulations focusing on product design, the plan identifies industries where circular design can make an impact while and actions needed to take to reduce waste.
• The European Green Deal (EGD): Initiative approved in 2020 with the goal of the EU becoming carbon neutral by 2050. It also focuses on reducing medium-term carbon emissions, by envisioning 55% less net greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (when compared to 1990 levels).
• Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): Launched in 2022, this directive replaces the 2009 Ecodesign Directive and broadens the range of efficiency and labeling requirements to all products for sale in the EU. The new directive outlines the DPP concept for consumers to understand what’s in the product.
• ISO/IEC 6523 is a standard whose aim is to define a structure for uniquely identifying organizations and parts thereof in computer data interchange and specify the registration procedure to obtain an international code designator (ICD) value for an identification scheme.
