In our opinion, the 2026 Gartner research paints a clear picture of where discrete manufacturing is heading regarding PLM requirements:
- PLM is expanding well beyond engineering. Buyers expect PLM to serve as the product record backbone connecting design, quality, procurement, manufacturing, commercialization, and service.
- The digital thread is no longer optional. Manufacturers want end-to-end traceability across mechanical, electrical, and software domains, plus tighter integration with enterprise resource planning (ERP), manufacturing execution systems (MES), application lifecycle management (ALM), and quality management systems (QMS).
- AI is moving from novelty to core capability. Gartner notes that “Going forward, AI is expected to evolve into more advanced, agent-driven capabilities that can automate cross-functional workflows and provide intelligent recommendations, making it an important consideration in PLM selection.”
- Cloud and SaaS are the default platforms. Buyers prioritize faster deployment, automatic updates, and lower infrastructure overhead — especially for small and midsize manufacturers.
- Supply chain resilience and sustainability are table stakes. Modern PLM is expected to include supplier collaboration, real-time risk insights, and support for materials, carbon, and regulatory tracking.
- Adoption is accelerating. By 2030, Gartner expects over 60% of manufacturers to rely on PLM as a core system for enabling AI-driven product innovation and development, up from about 20% today.

AI Is a Key Pillar of PLM
Gartner defines the AI-assistants and/or agents capability as the ability to support product lifecycle decisions using AI systems in PLM, ranging from large language model (LLM)-powered assistants that respond to prompts and perform tasks to AI agents that interpret goals, plan activities, use tools, and execute actions with limited human guidance during the product lifecycle.
Based on Gartner research, Arena believes AI will be a key criterion for discrete manufacturers when selecting a PLM solution. AI will help manufacturers create a more intelligent product lifecycle to meet today’s complex product development landscapes.
