What is a REACH?

REACH is mandatory for companies that use, supply, or manufacture chemical substances, or import them from outside the European Union (EU). Companies importing more than one ton per calendar year into the EU must register substances with the European Chemicals Agency.

REACH basically applies to chemicals in any kind of product which is covered under REACH as an “article.” The only exemptions under REACH are for the chemicals used in manufacturing food, defense, medical or veterinary products.

If you manufacture, use, import, or distribute one ton or more of chemical substances per year in the European Economic Area (EAA), you must register those substances with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

If you need to seek for authorization from ECHA, your declaration must include at least the following information:

• A report on chemical safety
• An assessment of any available substitutes for that chemical.
• If acceptable alternatives become available, a strategy explaining how you intend to replace the substance in the future.

To ensure REACH compliance, several manufacturers choose to submit full material disclosures (FMDs) of their products.
