Helping Companies Identify Environmental Sustainability Opportunities

Engineers Designing For Sustainability

This year, April 22 marks the 55th anniversary of celebrating Earth Day. Since 1970, EARTHDAY.ORG continues to raise public awareness and concern about conservation and sustainability for planet Earth.

In the spirit of Earth Day, PTC signed the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitment letter acknowledging the importance and urgency of sustainability and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. PTC’s CEO, Neil Barua, said, “In parallel with our SBTi commitments, we’re broadening the ways in which we support manufacturers’ efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of their products.”

PTC’s Strategic Impact on Sustainable Manufacturing

PTC is dedicated to making a significant contribution to the global manufacturing industry’s dematerialization and decarbonization. Although the company’s climate action strategy calls for reducing its footprint, it’s PTC’s handprint—their software products—that will have the biggest environmental impact. PTC’s solutions are designed to empower manufacturers to design, build, and service their products more sustainably while also considering other requirements, such as cost, compliance, performance, and appearance.

PTC gives manufacturers the power to create sustainably conscious products and drive environmental sustainability. PTC’s Vice President of Sustainability, Dave Duncan said, “The world’s engineers and product developers play incredibly important roles on the way forward. As well as the digital tools needed to support the development of innovative and minimal environmental impact solutions.”

“Remember that 80% of a product’s footprint is determined by the design,” he stated. “With innovative technology, well-thought-out processes, informed choices of raw materials, and balanced extraction of fossil substances and metals, the world’s engineers can make a lot happen. Everyone must help, but technological development has always been a fundamental part of human action.”1

A focus on reducing product carbon footprint with integrated SaaS solutions

Reducing the carbon footprint along with sustainable design in product development and product lifecycle is the topmost concern for many manufacturers and businesses. Yook is an environmental services company that focuses on environmental impact assessments in the clean tech sector. The company offers a software-as-a-service (SaaS) lifecycle assessment (LCA) platform that enables businesses to measure and understand the carbon footprint of their products, identify areas for reduction, and use results to better drive sustainability across their supply chains.

Enhancing Product Sustainability with Yook and PTC’s Arena Collaboration

With a recent partnership between Yook and PTC’s cloud-native SaaS PLM solution, Arena, manufacturers can efficiently manage product carbon footprints (PCF). Yook’s LCA solution requires minimal data inputs, makes expert knowledge optional, and enhances existing bill of materials (BOM) data with CO2 emission information.

By examining the environmental effect throughout the lifecycles of their products and the corresponding supply chains, businesses identify areas for risk and improvement. Equipped with this detailed information, management can make better calculated decisions to develop products that improve sustainability, reduce waste, and lessen the impact on the environment.

Yook’s Varena Junge, Co-Founder/CEO, said, “The collaboration of Arena and Yook empowers product teams to navigate compliance and drive decarbonization strategies on the product level with data-driven insights. We ensure manufacturers gain a competitive edge while contributing to a greener future.” The integration of Yook and Arena offers significant advantages for forward-thinking companies.

Arena PLM and Yook help ProGlove improve their carbon footprint

Headquartered in Munich, Germany, ProGlove makes smart wearable barcode scanners for modern supply chains. Their products are designed to help warehouse workers do their jobs more efficiently.

ProGlove’s product portfolio aims to improve productivity, safety, and ergonomics in various industries. Looking for ways to better understand their PCF and how to be more sustainable, the company turned to an integration between Yook’s LCA platform and Arena PLM. ProGlove selected one product line first, exporting their product record information managed in Arena and mapping it to Yook to perform the assessment.

Results in hand, they took a deep-dive approach into areas such as—how weight, scrap, and transport impacts C02 scores. With this analysis from Yook and Arena, ProGlove could see the hotspots of the product line and take quick actions to alleviate the most egregious while planning for future improvements. To reduce its carbon footprint and increase the sustainability of its products going forward, ProGlove is now implementing this process across all product lines.

More Ways Cloud Technologies Help Companies Reduce Environmental Impact

Energy Efficiency

Hardware needs are reduced with solutions built in the Cloud. Shifting workloads from on-premises data centers to the Cloud can significantly reduce carbon emissions, making the Cloud an eco-friendlier choice.

Resource Optimization

The Cloud offers organizations limitless computing, storage, networking capabilities, and advanced software applications. This leads to optimized resource use, cost efficiencies, and operational savings.

Enabling Remote Teams

Cloud-based solutions enable remote teams to be more productive through seamless collaboration, improved accessibility, enhanced data/information security, optimized spending (providing flexibility to scale up/down depending on requirements), and better compliance management.

Arena PLM enhances operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact

Product companies can reduce the environmental impact of their physical products with a cloud-native solution like Arena PLM. By championing cloud-native solutions, product companies and manufacturers are not only enhancing their operational efficiency but also contributing significantly toward environmental sustainability. From engineering, to quality, to supply chain, to manufacturing, Arena drives sustainability across the entire product lifecycle.

Being sustainable pays off

The growing urgency in managing climate related issues has captured businesses and organizations worldwide. More than 8,000 companies and countries representing 90% of the global gross domestic product (GDP) have committed to reaching net zero by 2050.2 Leaders need to work together to continue to make the business world safer and more environmentally sustainable.

As we celebrate the 55th Earth Day, global optimism is growing as more businesses are exploring ways to be more environmentally sustainable. Companies such as PTC, Yook, and ProGlove are proven examples that sustainable practices deliver benefits not only to their workforce but also to the environment and other facets of the business, such as risk mitigation processes, business resilience, and financial performance—environmental sustainability pays.
