bom.com Wins Prestigious Industrial Design Excellence
Award (IDEA)
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Solution Recognized for Innovative Design and User Benefits
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 28, 2002 — bom.com today announced that it has been honored by the 2002 Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). IDEA, which is co-sponsored by BusinessWeek and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), is widely regarded as the premier award worldwide for industrial design. The 174 winners, chosen from a pool of 1,116 entries, were announced today by BusinessWeek.
bom.com received a Bronze award in the Digital Media and Interfaces category for its online product lifecycle management (PLM) solution. The product was designed by an internal engineering team, led by chief technology officer Eric Larkin and product development director Janet Yu, in collaboration with principals Victor Zauderer and Marc Escobosa of Zaudhaus, a creative design and consulting firm that is the company’s interface development partner.
“Anyone who won a 2002 IDEA should feel very good about it,” Jury Chair Chuck Jones, FIDSA, said. “This jury had vast knowledge of all the categories and was stringent in its deliberations and choices. These winning designs were face-changing designs, functional, hit the specific target audience and were designed with the sound principles that our members demand.”
“For an enterprise software application to provide maximum benefit, it must be a tool that individuals will actually use,” said Michael Topolovac, president and chief executive officer of bom.com. “For that reason, bom.com focuses not only on providing full-featured PLM functionality, but also on making that functionality available through an intuitive, easy-to-use interface. To receive an award echoing what our customers are telling us - that bom.com is succeeding at those design objectives - is a tremendous honor.”
IDEA winners, selected by a jury of 16 non-affiliated designers, were judged in five areas of industrial design excellence: 1. design innovation, 2. benefit to the user, 3. benefit to the client/business, 4. ecological responsibility, and 5. appropriate aesthetics and appeal. bom.com and the rest of the IDEA 2002 winners will be featured on the IDSA website at www.idsa.org.
