Our history
-
1994: Arena founders Michael Topolovac and Eric Larkin were running Light & Motion Industries, manufacturing underwater video camera housings and lighting systems. With a growing number of new models in the works—and plans to introduce additional product lines—their product team was making changes to their homegrown spreadsheet BOMs more frequently and the company’s product data was growing increasingly complex.
-
1996: The original prototype for Arena BOMControl was born. The term product lifecycle management (PLM) wasn’t around yet, but that is what they built: a system used by the entire Light & Motion organization to manage the design, sourcing, manufacture and sale of its products as they moved from concept through end-of-life.
-
2000: Light & Motion had been enjoying years of significant gains in productivity, product quality and profit margins. At the same time advances in Internet speeds, web standards and software technology made it clear there was a market for an internet-based PLM system. They formed a new company, bom.com, to enable the collaboration, availability and other benefits that only an online solution could provide. Though no one talked about "cloud computing" yet, this was the first cloud-native PLM system in the world.
-
2003: Recognizing the world of PLM was bigger than the BOM, bom.com became Arena, and expanded into a collaborative BOM and change management tool used by tens of thousands of users worldwide in a wide range of industries.
-
Today: With the introduction of PartsList and PDXViewer—new applications that speed product innovation and streamline supply chain management—Arena’s core application is renamed to BOMControl. The trio of cloud PLM applications offer greater flexibility and enable manufacturers of all sizes to get up and running quickly at a price that meets their budget. Customers quickly start seeing the first benefits—increased productivity, greater efficiencies, accurate data—and as development cycles progress, they begin enjoying benefits like faster time to market, more consistent product quality and superior product margins.
